A personal short film project by animator Mark Hatchard to create an animated burning 3D candle using Subsurface Scattering and Fluid Dynamics

When working on an animation project produced for an artist's exhibition Mark Hatchard was required to create a photo-real 3D candle and burning flame. When creating the candle Mark found very little reference material online, so once the project was complete Mark produced a new candle from scratch and wrote two tutorials for our animation and design blog to help anyone attempting to do the same.
The candle's model, textures, lighting and rendering was achieved using a combination of Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.
The tutorials talk through the entire process of modelling, texturing, lighting, animating and rendering the candle and flame with a particular focus on the Subsurface Scattering technique used for the candle wax and the Fluid Dynamics used for the candle flame.
